Competitor Analysis
Notable design systems compared and analysed:
- Adobe — Spectrum
- Apple — Human Interface Guidelines
- Google — Material Design
- IBM — Carbon Design System
- SAP — Fiori
Goldman Sachs Design System was released in the later stages of this project so was also used for inspiration.
Even evaluated Storybook, but was deemed more for developers and not suitable for designers to maintain.
Documentation Platform — Platforms Evaluation
I tried to glean from the source code from each of the design systems what software / platforms / services were used. Unfortunately, the source code didn't give any useful information away.
Eventually, from my research, I stumbled across "Static-Site Generators" (SSGs), which led me to download and install a number of them, alongside registering for some cloud-hosted solutions for evaluation:
- Catalog
- Docsy
- Docusaurus
- Docz
- Gatsby
- Hugo
- MkDocs
- Patternfly
- Storybook
- Zero Height
MkDocs was eventually chosen for its built-in (out-of-the-box) search functionality, which unlike the majority of products didn't have to call an externally-hosted service, as the Halo design System would initially be hosted internally within the corporate intranet and not be publicly accessible due to various IT security policy and network restrictions.
