Introduction

Why I got into trading

I have been day trading on-and-off since June 2016 after realising that I needed to build up some long-term savings / investments. Initially I looked at managed funds but didn't want to pay someone to look after and "gamble" with my money — instead I decided that I wanted total control of my investments and CFD trading (and spread betting) allowed me to do that.

With my financial knowledge learned over the years, I thought I was in a very good position to be successful, and having previously watched inspiring documentories about house-wife day-traders, I thought if they can be successful, so could I.

In the beginning, I stupidly delved straight in using a real trading account, foregoing the free use of a virtual trading account to practice and almost immediately incurred losses.

Despite initially incurring huge losses during the learning process, I have made some impressive gains on trades and demonstrates my ability to enter a trade at the right time to generate a double-digit percentage return on investment (usually) within a small time-frame.

With a typical UK-based bank account offering at most 0.5% interest per year on your cash, it is rewarding to see that I can put my money into a trading account instead and generate far more additional income from profitable trades within a matter of minutes to hours.

My aim this year is to improve my risk management by using stop-losses more effectively to limit my potential losses if a trade suddenly goes against me.

Observations

from my own trading experience

Better Returns with Indices

Investing in Indices (e.g. FTSE, Nikkei, DAX, Dow Jones, S&P, Nasdaq) generally generate faster and higher returns compared with other instruments such as equities (stocks), foreign exchange (currencies) and commodities (with the exception of Oil).

"What If" Scenario

If I had a spare £10,000 lying around and had the "balls" to invest that amount for each trade for January 2019, I would have made £22,938 in profit from trading for just 6 days (whilst still retaining my original £10,000).

For May 2018, this amount would have been £25,177 in profit from trading for 5 days.

For March 2018, this would have been £29,055 in profit from trading for 6 days.

The Nikkei Index is King

As you may have noticed, the Nikkei is my favourite instrument to trade. From my own experience, it generates pretty good returns in a short time.

Don't Read The Financial News

Don't take the heading too literally. My point is don't blindly base a trade on something you've read or heard in the news.

By the time news is printed and published or broadcast, it's already out of date and the price direction would have already changed or the news item would have had no or minimal effect on the price of the instrument.

Spotting Patterns is Key

Day-trading involves learning to spot trends and patterns in the pricing charts.

All of my trades rely on the technical analysis of these charts and once you're able to spot these patterns you'll be able to determine the optimal entry-points and exit-points of most profitable trades.

Learn Using a Virtual Account

Don't blow all your money away like I did by going straight in using a real trading account.

Practice with a virtual account first.
